Sector 15 roads dug six months ago, area residents peeved

Dug up roads in sector 15 pose danger to area residents
Irate sector 15 residents demand immediate carpeting of drug up roads

Chandigarh, April 13,2010
The V-roads of sector 15, dug up six months ago, have drawn ire from the area residents. Peeved at the callous attitude of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation authorities, the area residents even allege that the MC had dug up roads but is yet to float tenders for its carpeting.
Area resident Asim Jain, a chartered accountant, rued that the V roads of the sector were dug up in October 2009 with a view to widen them and now the MC has dug up even inner roads of the sector.
Imagine if this is the condition of Mayor Anu Chatarath’s own ward, what to talk about the other areas, in fact the Mayor even resides in this sector, so the wrong things are happening right under her nose
Jain revealed that while V-roads have been dug, stones laid and filled with mud, the MC is yet to float tenders for its carpeting. He added that ideally a road is immediately carpeted with coal-tar and bitumen after being laid with mud. However, at sector 15 it has been over six months and relief does not seem to be round the corner in near future.
Talking about the work initiated on inner roads he said that already the existing roads are 22 feet wide with four feet space left on either sides. “Widening it would only lead to increase in speed of vehicles plying on it and children playing on roads would be at risked,” he said.
He added that the work on inner roads was initiated without informing area residents. JCB machine dug up the roads without informing people whose cars got stuck up. Those cars that were parked on the ramps of houses could not be moved and those standing outside could not be parked inside the houses.
Added to this the dug up roads have posed danger for area residents. Children have to be picked up to get to their homes. The pits dug are as deep as around 1.5 feet. The department is shifting storm water pipes and the holes dug up for it have not been covered that can cause mishap any time. People are unable to park their cars inside their houses and end up crowding the roads.
“The nightmare got even worst when the JCB machine working here pulled out underground power cables leading to power failure in many parts of the sector. When we lodged complaint with the electricity department authorities, they said that the MC officials had not informed them about digging work before hand,” said advocate Vishal Gupta. He added that instead of mending these snapped power cables permanently, the electricity department officials twisted the wires to repair and then left the circuit exposed.
Interestingly, some area residents even pointed out that area in front of houses of some Congress workers has been left untouched. The MC has adopted pick and choose policy even in such a mundane work like road widening, alleged area residents. They have sought immediate redressal of the problem.

Lead free Eco Ducts takes over air-conditioner industry

Lead free Eco Ducts takes over air-conditioner industry
Eco Ducts – a revolutionary ducting system in ACs
Eco Ducts adds health to green buildings
Eco Ducts – a healthier AC option

Chandigarh, April 10,2010
Lead free Eco Ducts of Mangla Sons industry, a revolutionary ducting system used in air flow in centrally air-conditioned buildings, has been adding health to the green buildings.
Talking about this unique ducting system, Pawan Mangla, Director, Eco Duct said that these Eco Ducts are the healthiest options for ducting available in market.
The ducts are widely used in centrally conditioned set ups such as hospitals, office buildings, schools and malls for carrying and circulating the fresh and cool air.
“Instead of providing fresh air, the usual ducts emit harmful gases. Ducts already present in market, used in air-conditioning systems, contain lead that is cancer causing element and injurious to health. Very presence of toxic materials like lead makes air obnoxious and may have long term health risks,” he added.
He said that prolonged exposure to lead interferes with an array of body processes and several studies conducted have found lead harmful. “In fact lead laced fuels like petrol were banned in India because of its harmful effect and obnoxious emissions,” he revealed.
An initiative of Mohali-based Mangla Sons, Eco Ducts, is the first to flood market using eco-friendly technology that refreshes interiors in true sense.
Eco-ducts are manufactured from lead free galvanized sheets. “These are being produced at our most modern plant from the galvano sheets, which is a TATA Steel product,” he revealed.
Mangla revealed that these ducts bring a gush of fresh and healthy air along and are a great contribution to the concept of green buildings, which is gaining popularity because of their reduced overall impact on human health and natural environment.
“As an employer and businessman, it’s my duty to safeguard my employees and customers health. Imagine a hospital putting risk of its patients and heath workers at risk using lead laced ducts or even the shopping malls risking lives of avid shoppers using the toxic ducts,” he reasoned.

600 varsities, 35000 colleges needed in country, PTU VC
Need to set up own entrepreneur ventures, PTU VC

Kharar, April 8,2010

To satiate rising demand for education and knowledge, India needs 600 new universities and 35000 colleges. This has expanded the horizon for private institutes to step forward and be a part of nation building.

Punjab Technical University vice-chancellor Dr Rajnish Arora said this while talking to students at the inaugural session of two-days national conference on challenges emerging in computer technologies being hosted at Rayat & Bahra Institute of Engineering And Bio-Technology.

Talking about his first visit to a private technical college at the onset of new financial year, he lauded efforts of Rayat-Bahra group in raising a standard par excellence.

Encouraging the computer engineering students to be job creators of society, Dr Arora emphasized on need of being a successful entrepreneur and developing jobs.

Talking about the high influx of information in today’s e-age, he said that there is flood of information on the internet. With this knowledge management becomes urgent need of hour. “The information explosion poses a challenge for computer sciences students to manage it,” he said.

He also spoke on need to develop efficient video and image processing algorithms, urgency to develop untraceable data security banks, wide expanse of robotics in day-to-day life that makes use of ideal computation facility for common man and need to develop gadgets like mobiles that suit Indian needs.

Computer navigated joint replacement surgery at Fortis Hospital
Success rate of Computer navigated joint replacement surgery is 95 – 98 %.
Ludhiana, April 6,2010 ( ).
Patients having undergone computer navigated joint-replacement surgery can walk unaided just after three weeks of surgery. Dr Harsimran Singh, (MS, MCH-Ortho) of Fortis Hospital, Mohali and the founder of Orthopilot Navigation center at hospital revealed this while addressing a press conference today. He quoted NHS UK study which says that while the success rate of manual knee replacement is 80 – 85 % where as Computer Navigated increases success rate to 95 – 98 %.
A trained orthopilot navigation surgeon from Sydney, Australia, Dr Harsimran added that the innovative technique has not only revolutionized joint-replacement surgeries, but have also decreased rehabilitation period of patient.
Post surgery a patient is easily able to walk with in 48 hours with the help of a walker, can climb stairs at two weeks, walk without walker or any stick as early as three weeks and can return to the previous job in four weeks. Even blood loss during surgery is significantly reduced.
He added that knee surgery entails two basic steps including bone cuts and ligament balancing. In conventional joint replacement surgery, surgeons rely on alignment rods to place bone-cutting blocks. The surgeons have to align them visually and hence it leaves larger scope of human error.
“Something that looks like 90 degrees to me can actually be anything between 85 to 95 degrees. As a result, implant remains misaligned to some extent. It can be responsible for residual pain after surgery, prolonged recovery time and early failure of prosthesis,” he added.
On the other hand, a computer assisted knee surgery uses computer software program to calculate angles of knee. Small infrared markers are placed on leg and thighbones and these are picked up by infrared camera attached to a computer. This enables surgeon to place cutting blocks and balance ligaments at an accuracy and precision of tune of 0.1mm variation, he said.
End result is recreation of knee alignment and balance exactly as in a native and healthy knee. This leads to faster recovery and better function. As accuracy level is very high, it also helps in increasing life of implants.
With advent of new technology and improvement in knee replacement product designs, a person undergoing knee replacement can look forward to comfortably fold his legs and sit cross-legged for nit name and pooja.
In it’s endeavor to serve the people of Ludhiana Fortis hospital has started Dr Harsimran’s OPD at Ludhiana Medicity Hospital on last Tuesday of every month.

International pre-school & day care - Maple Bear
Maple Bear international preschool chain comes up in tri-city
International preschool Maple Bear comes up at The Stepping Stones
Chandigarh, April 5,2010
The parents of tiny tots of new millennium now have an opportunity to get best of the international standard pre-schooling and day care for their children at Maple Bear – a Canadian Early Childhood Program established at Stepping Stones School, Sector 37 Chandigarh. Maple Bear, which is a part of the international chain of preschools, has been launched in the tri-city in collaboration with Manuja Foundation.
Talking to media persons here today, Aarti Manuja, Managing Director, Manuja Foundation Maple Bear said that this is first-of-its kind preschool in tri-city, we would create an environment that facilitates children from 18 months onwards to achieve their developmental milestones at the right age.
Maple Bear Centre will operate from 9 am to 6 pm, thus facilitating the parents, especially both working parents to leave their kids in educated home environment. “Program is especially designed for 3 hours, 6 hours and 9 hours slot. The slots have been designed keeping in view the societal needs and commitments of present generation parents,” she added.
While detailing about Maple Bear Early Childhood Program president Global Schools Maple Bear Rodney Briggs said that school’s methodology works on making children learn through experience and exploration.
“Going to a Learning Centre, should be a pleasurable experience for child that he or she looks forward to everyday. This creates the eagerness to learn things, inculcate positive attitude and confidence needed in today’s world,” he said.
“These are community based units; so, we shall endeavour to develop multiple small units in the cities so that young kids are not made to commute long distances to attend the facility” said Sarita Manuja, the chairperson.
The centre has introduced the concept of transparent classrooms that would enable parents to watch their child attending the centre, online while at work or from home. Unique programs like Moms and Tots, Saturday Program, Spring/Summer/Winter Camps on one hand and the trained human resource, flexible entry and exit timings on the other hand, are the other highlights of the Centre.
Briggs felt that the kind of knowledge and skills, a child acquires during his or her kindergarten days, forms foundation of the years of schooling, college education and the life as a whole, to come.
“Our impetus is not on making children study. We aim at making education a part of life and not a burden. We have string of activities embedded in day-to-day working in healthy, stimulating and supportive learning environment,” he added.
“It recognizes English literacy as fundamental component of a child's success in English medium schools and has ensured that language development, books and reading are central to all activities in program.”
Understanding the present scenario of parents frequently changing stations, Maple Bear provides for inter centre transfers too. Program is being offered in several cities in India like Delhi, Gorakhpur, Chandigarh, Indirapuram, Greater Noida, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Kanpur, Indore, Dehradun, Beawar (Ajmer), Agra, Amritsar, Meerut, Gurgoan, Vishakapatnam, Bangalore, Chennai and across the world in Bangladesh, Korea, Brazil, Vietnam, Paris, Turkey, Morocco and China.

Parents go back to Classrooms; get a first hand experience of new

Parents go back to Classrooms; get a first hand experience of new
teaching methodologies adopted at The Millennium School, Mohali.

April 04, 2010: Orientation day was today held at ‘The Millennium School’, Mohali to give parents an over view of the school and apprise them with the new age learning methodologies and techniques being adopted at the school.

The school adopted a unique means to bring alive for the parents, the experience of being a student of TMS. The parents sat in a classrooms environment to understand how the new technologies were being adopted by the schools to enhance the teaching learning experience and produce better learning outcomes among all students.

Keeping in mind the key concerns of all parents of school going children- that their child should receive the best possible education and should be treated as an individual and not just as part of a crowd, TMS made a very interesting and informative presentation to the parents that outlined how the school has been successful in this regard. By adopting the ancient ‘Gurukul’ system, where the focus is on the individual and on personalized learning, TMS has achieved its objective of being a totally child-centric school. By seamlessly blending the best of traditional and modern methodologies, TMS is catering to the needs of all their students in an effective manner.

Parents were told how the Millennium Learning System (MLS) created by the R & D division of Educomp Solutions, that forms the basis of the TMS curriculum, is a unique system, for it takes into account many key things that are generally neglected in schools---first and foremost the fact that all children learn differently. Just as no two children are alike in habits or physical appearance, similarly the way they learn may be just as unique. In education this is referred to as learning styles. It is not what a person learns but how he learns.

There are different ways of describing learning styles, but the simplest learning style is the VAK standing for Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic. Helping children to learn based on their natural learning style helps them acquire knowledge in a meaningful way---this is how it is done at TMS.

To further elaborate on learning styles, three lessons were conducted by teachers, where volunteer parents acted as students to give them a taste of how teaching is conducted in the classrooms. The lesson for nursery children was about teaching the use of the fine motor skills in the form of making a table mat by vegetable printing; in the EVS lesson for class V, a lesson was taught on ‘Inside our Earth’ through an activity which brought clarity to the concept. A lesson on ‘circle’ and its elements was effectively taught through an activity and the Smart Class (digital content) module.

The parents were, thereafter, taken on a round of the classrooms, where they met all the teachers and were informed about other unique aspects of the Millennium Learning System.

The Millennium Schools

Achievement Driven, Research Proven & Powered by Technology & Innovation

Students in this millennium live in a fast paced, technology driven, and constantly changing environment. Learning in the current context calls for a paradigm shift in the curriculum, the role of a teacher and teaching methodology.

A City School that has put this into practice is The Millennium School,Jalandhar TMS Jalandhar is part of a chain of schools spread across the country –The Millennium Schools. These schools are powered by Millennium Learning System developed by 100 educational researchers at India’s premier Education Company, Educomp Solutions Ltd, that has pioneered the digital learning revolution in India

According to Mrs. Punam Singhal, Principal, The Millennium School Jalandhar, Children today must be self-directed, tech-smart and lifelong learners in order to become citizens of future who are confident, optimistic with a commitment to personal excellence. She also on the need to make the learning process enjoyable. She says, “Millennium Learning System is a scientifically designed system that supports each child’s Unique learning style. MLS uses the most advanced audio, visual & kinesthetic learning techniques, making education effortless and effective. MLS drives our schools’s philosophy , culture , pedagogy & instructional methodology” . .

The Millennium Schools have been designed to meet the needs of the 21st century learner. Education in these schools concerns itself with development of capabilities amongst students, which are needed for problem solving, rational decision-making, communicating and for success in the workplace. The firm focus is on unleashing each child’s creativity, fostering leadership qualities and interpersonal skills. All rounded development of physical abilities with cognitive enrichment will be the hallmark of the schools. In essence, the school will act as “enablers” -identifying and nurturing the talent of every student and develop in each student human, secular and democratic values.

Personalized Learning: A key hallmark of the Millennium School is providing personalized learning to each and every child. School believes that child learn in a different ways. At The Millennium School each child is given individual attention allowing them to learn in the way best suited to them. The intent is to ensure that each child is meaningfully and most productively engaged in the learning process and to optimize each child's learning potential and success.

This is done through
o Individual attention that is provided through a conducive teacher student ratio of 1:12, small class size of 25 in pre school.

o Tracking each child’s learning style & profile from the time the child takes admission till the time she / he leaves. This enables TMS to customize learning for each child

o Curriculum that is based on learner needs- their developmental milestones, multiple intelligences and different learning styles-auditory, visual and kinesthetic.

o The usage of multiple teaching strategies help TMS to involve and engage different types of learners. For example, for a child who is a kinesthetic learner, the School provide opportunities for doing role plays and hands on activities. A child who is a visual learner is taught through mind mapping techniques. A child who is an auditory learner will learn through CDs being played in the classroom. A primary emphasis on active learning is provided through hands on projects, group discussions, research work; problem based learning, presentations etc. Children are encouraged to think laterally and creatively.

o Innovative Textbooks that help in providing personalized learning. These innovative textbooks are the result of 80 man years of work put in by the R&D team at Educomp Solutions. These books encapsulate activities that enable each child to apply the concept. For example, while learning about fractions, children are asked to measure the quantity of milk they drink at home and note what fraction of milk they are drinking. This not only helps each child to apply what he has learnt at school into his daily life but also his answer is unique to himself- not simply copied from the textbook. Each child participates in individual and group projects through out the school years.

o Technology plays a huge role in Personalised learning. The smart class system installed in TMS provides teachers with instant access to relevant instructor led multimedia content and instruction materials mapped exactly to the specific curriculum guidelines for use in class. The Smart Assessment System is a key tool of personalized learning that enables teachers to instantly assess and evaluate the learning achieved by their students in class with innovative use of technology. This is achieved in class by allowing students to respond to questions through their hand held remote answering devices. SAS also keeps a track of every student’s progress on a real time basis for teachers to build their individual remedial teaching strategies. The Campus Management system enables TMS to use technology effectively for tracking the performance of the students over the years.
o TMS’s assessment framework ensures that each child’s performance is assessed in each period in each subject. This helps teachers to identify whether each students has really understood the concept taught. The report card mentions strengths, areas of improvement, performance of student vis-à-vis the class. Individual remediation plan is co created along with parents.

o Personalised Development of Talent- TMS strongly believes that all students have within themselves inherent talent and potential and that the school must be a catalyst in the development of every child’s potential. The schools therefore offer a very wide variety of enrichment in different areas- intellectual, creative, physical and interpersonal. Talent is identified through observational techniques and usage of profiling tools. A good example of this TMS’s Science Enrichment Program which is being developed in collaboration with IIT Madras.

Lack of hygiene, awareness plagues dental health in rural Punjab, study

Dental health no priority for rural Punjab, study
Mouth is health’s mirror - Dr Neha & Dr. Sakshi

Rajpura, April 1,2010

Lack of hygiene and awareness plagues dental health of people staying in rural pockets of the state. In order to address this issue, Surya World – Institutes of academic Excellence, Bapror has decided to carry out a study cum free dental service in the villages around. A series of free dental health care camps are being conducted. A study conducted by Dr Neha and Dr Sakshi, Dental Surgeons, Surya Dental Care Centre at Surya World in the villages of Rajpura has come out with these revealing facts. Rural People have low awareness and poor oral hygiene habits.

They opined that mouth is a mirror reflecting health. Numerous recent studies investigating mouth-body connection have suggested an association between oral health and general health. For instance, there is a growing body of evidence indicating that chronic gum disease may contribute to the development of heart disease.

Study revealed that people do not consider oral health a key player towards ensuring dental well being. “Instead villagers associate dental problems with lifestyle related reasons like improper eating habits and being born with bad teeth - a perception quiet common in rural areas,” they said.

Interestingly, study tracked oral health care products usage patterns in villages and came across the fact that good number of villagers are heavily dependent (37 percent) on non-dentifrice products such as Neemstick (datun), charcoal and ash for dental care.

Surprisingly, 70 per cent of people from sample group had never visited a dentist and meager five per cent visit a dentist regularly.

Lack of awareness can be gauged from the fact that over 60 per cent were unconcerned about preventing or curing dental problems. All this despite the fact that 24 per cent of villagers had suffered from toothache in past one year, 96 per cent were aware of the problem, but only as few as 17 per cent took treatment from a dentist, Dr Neha added.

The study states that respondents were aware of the dental problems they suffered from such as cavities, stained teeth, gum and swollen gums. “But even a higher percentage did not care for such problems,” she while talking to media persons at a free dental check up camp held at village Shambhu today wherein about 135 persons were examined.

Mr. Rajiv Goel, CMD, Surya Pharmaceutical Ltd. and President Surya Educational & Charitable Trust Group of Institutes said, “As part of our CSR, our war against dental ailments among rural folk would continue unabated.” He told that free dental health care facility was being provided to all village folks at Surya Dental Care Centre at Surya World campus, Bapror where excellent facilities exist.

Dr. BS Sohi, Campus Director, Surya World Institutions of Academic Excellence said that in order to mitigate oral problems, it was important to raise awareness level in masses. He said that Need of hour is to combine prevention with curative treatment and involve people from rural pockets in this task.
