Elements Akademia debuts in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, June 30
There is no dearth of jobs, yet youth are unemployed. The factor of employability needs to be inculcated in youngsters.
This was felt at a seminar, organized by Elements Akademia, on making youth employable today. Elements Akademia - conceptualized, funded and run by a group of 15 IIM Alumni - is India’s first chain of finishing schools aimed at bridging gap between academic theory and industry requirements, thereby making graduates employable.
A panel of eminent companies and academia of Chandigarh discussed the issue. Mr. Satish Bagrodia, National President, PHD Chambers of Commerce & Industry inaugurated the seminar at PHD Chamber for Commerce and Industry, Sector 31 A. Ravinder Kakkar, Center Director, Elements Akademia Chandigarh delivered a welcome note.
Mr. Nishant Saxena, CEO, Elements Akademia, revealed that there are 6 million new jobs every year in service sector but only 2.5 million graduates. “There are jobs for everyone. Despite whopping number of 6 million, organized sector employs only 13 percent of them. We need to introspect on this and it is here that role of Elements Akademia begins,” he said.
He added that India's service sector is booming but faces an acute skilled manpower shortage, despite the presence of a large graduate pool. A part of the malady is perhaps in our university education system, which offers degrees but often fails to make graduates "employable".
Elements Akademia aims to bridge that gap by offering 6 months part-time vocational course designed with the help of our corporate partners, who are leading players in various service sectors like Insurance (MNYL), BPO/KPO (Genpact), Retail (Reliance), Banking (KMB) etc. This prepares graduates in tier II cities for entry level Jobs in the booming service sector of India like insurance, kpos/bpos, banking, retail, telecom, hospitality etc.

Saxena said that vision is to annually make 10,000+ Indians employable - reaching out to non-metro cities to attract students, train them (on a curriculum designed with our corporate partners, some of the world's best companies in their respective sectors), and then help them get placed in our partners and beyond.
The talks focused on drastic mismatch between Industry skill requirements and kind of stuff our academic institutions teach. Brain storming session on ways to arrive at a short-term and long-term solution to actually make the youth employable was held.
Mr. Satish Bagrodia, National President, PHD Chambers of Commerce & Industry and Mr. TPS Walia, COO Tata Tele Services (Punjab & HP Circle) spoke on requirements of corporate looking for qualities when they hire people.
Mr. Vinay Sharma, COO Elements Akademia presented the research findings on key skills corporates look for in new recruits.
Dr. A K Saihjpal, Diector, UIAMS, Punjab University summed up the talk pointing that how today’s youth “focuses less on employment and more on employability (and is therefore) driving a privatization of skill development.”
Principals and students from major degree colleges of Chandigarh, besides senior executives from top companies and government representatives participated in the symposium. Delegates (directors of 30 Chandigarh colleges) presented their views for a minute each.
This was part of a series of symposiums that Elements is organizing across the country to deliberate on the burning issue of youth employability.

Countries relax immigration norms to accommodate Indian immigrants

Chandigarh, June 29: The economic slowdown, that threatens to shake the very foundation of developed nations of the world, has failed to leave even a trace of impact on Indian immigration industry. With developed nations ageing at a rapid pace, which is projected to continue till 2025, young India stands as a treasure of human resources.
Lt Col BS Sandhu (Retd), Chairman & Managing Director (CMD), WWICS, World Wide Immigration Consultancy Services says that Global immigration is making waves as developed nations deal with aging populations and impending labor shortages. Many governments are implementing major changes to their immigration policies to ease them for influx of talented and hard working immigrants.
Post-landing services remain USP of WWICS. Along with its associate, Global Placement Services (GPS) it has provided placement and settlement to more than 70000 people and interacts with more than 5000 North American companies to meet their human resource needs. Many employers and corporate houses have projected their demand for employees. Also many WWICS clients get confirmed job offer prior to getting visa”, says Col Sandhu.
Col. Sandhu adds that Canada and Australia are improving their immigration policies to respond to needs of employers and potential immigrants. Since Canadian & Australian economy depends heavily on immigration to fill shortages in its labor market, applicants falling under Canada’s 38 Priority Occupation List (POL) and Australia’s Critical Skill List (CSL) are processed on fast-track system and applicant gets decision within a short span of 12 months.
As far as Canadian immigration is concerned, one could also qualify for Permanent Residency with the help of Arranged Employment Opinion or the Canadian Experience Class. Being the best country for quality education in the world, Canada continues to attract international students pursuing careers in almost all disciplines. WWICS with its excellent networking with top education institutes has been helping the students from all over the world to seek admissions in Canada. WWICS has also demonstrated its strong presence in Australian education system by helping students to get admissions in top Australian Universities and Colleges.
The Permanent Residency in Canada through investment is another option especially for business people under the Canadian Federal Investor Program. By investing just Rs. 50 lakhs the applicants would be able to immigrate on fast track system within 6-12 months. Moreover there is no requirement of IELTS. With 2 years business experience and having networth equivalent to CDN 800,000, would make them qualify for this opportunity enabling their entire family to immigrate.
Even Czech Republic and Ukraine with liberalized business immigration policies are attracting entrenched Indian capital investors who can explore business, investment & farming opportunities and can reap rich dividends in a short span.
WWICS is also helping professionals to immigrate to Denmark under Danish Green Card Scheme. This point based immigration enables the applicants to reach Denmark again within 6-12 months.
Under the Tier -1 General Skilled Migration Program, WWICS has been helping the aspirants to settle in United Kingdom. Under this new point based system the applicants are qualifying to reach their dream destination in just about 30 days after the complete submission of documents.
Col. Sandhu says that during our recent seminar series in India & Overseas, we have witnessed an overwhelming response that proves the point against all odds including the present economic slowndown. There’s always an opportunity for people with special skills to demonstrate their abilities in the countries who seek such immigrants.

Listen to your child’s heart for abnormality

Heart trouble and your child
One in hundred children born with heart defect
Children with congenital heart defects can lead healthy life with surgery, Dr P Mankad

Ludhiana, June 25.
When Baby Noor Fatima from Pakistan was operated in 2003 in India, the word of heart defects amongst newly born children spread around quickly. Fatima was amongst many cases that were fortunate enough to undergo surgery and get timely intervention for the ailment.

One, in every hundred children, is born with heart defects. In India there are more than 1 lakh kids being born with congenital defects every year. It remains commonest cause of death in first year of life, says Dr Pankaj Mankad, senior Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon from Edinburgh, Scotland, who will now be at Grecian Hospital, Mohali to serve children with heart defects once in two months.

Dr Mankad adds that in 99 percent of cases there is no cause known for this condition. While many children exhibit signs and symptoms of heart trouble right after the time of birth, others take couple of years to be detected as what we call “heart patients”.

Parents can act in a big way by identifying the symptoms of ailment in their child and help in early intervention. Parents should be aware of signs and symptoms such as baby not feeding well, getting tired or sweating while feeding because of the extra work needed to eat, having repeated chest infections, unexplained fever, not putting on enough weight or not growing properly.

Those children with mixing of blood appear dark or blue depending on skin pigmentation. This gives blue or purple hue to the skin. In some children, a buzzing sound is felt when hand is placed on the chest.
In 90% of kids a pediatrician is able to hear a murmur (abnormal heart sound) while examining the child with a stethoscope. An echocardiogram or ECG is done to help diagnose the defect
Older children with congestive heart failure are beyond time of rapid growth and therefore do not have major growth problems like infants. Their symptoms are usually related to their inability to tolerate exercise. They become short of breath more quickly compared to their peers and need to rest more often.

Shortness of breath can occur even with minimal exertion, such as climbing stairs or taking a walk if the heart failure is severe. In children with heart failure, passing out during exercise may be very serious and needs to be evaluated immediately. Appetite may be poor when heart failure is severe and weight loss or lack of weight gain can be seen even in older children.

Some children will retain fluid and will actually gain weight with heart failure and appear puffy. As it is harder to determine parameters for heart failure in older children, it is important to look for change in exercise capabilities or progression of symptoms with time.

Dr Shivpreet Singh Samra, Managing Director, Grecian Hospital, Mohali says, “Grecian Hospital is the only hospital beyond Delhi, capable of successfully conducting the child heart surgeries. With Dr Pankaj Mankad joining us, the children suffering from heart disease in this region have got a savior.”

Dr Pankaj Mankad is a senior heart surgeon who has been working in UK since 1983. He has been Consultant at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary since 1990. He specializes in operating on complex heart diseases of children. He shall be operating at Grecian Hospital, Mohali every two months. He will be here till July 10 2009 and shall return in September.

Although a lot of facilities exist for heart surgery in adults, there is no dedicated facility for children’s hearts in North India. Patients have to go to Delhi. This is very expensive and inconvenient. The cost for such surgeries is about Re 2.5 lakhs in private hospitals. Institutes like AIIMS have very long waiting lists.

The children from poor and middle-income groups end up succumbing to the ailment. Over the past 3 years Grecian Hospital has carried out 74 surgeries on children with heart defects.

All those who wish to get their children treated by him should approach Grecian Hospital at 0 98146 10390/ 0 98550 70390. Depending on complexity of the case and financial situation of patient discounts can be offered as well.
