Shemrock holds seminar on positive parenting

Parents get sensitized towards positive parenting

Mohali, January 23
Shemrock Senior Secondary School, sector 69 Mohali held a seminar on positive parenting for the parents having children between 3 to 8 years age group.
The school vice principal Sohal introduced key speaker at the seminar, a noted psychologist Dr Deepali Sharma who has worked with international institutions as child psychologist.
Dr Sharma emphasized on the qualities required for effective parenting. She deliberated on some of the common behavioral and emotional problems that young children display. “The behavior such as throwing temper and tantrums, excessive shyness, lying, sibling rivalry, bed wetting, having fears, phobias and academic skill related problems can be easily solved at parents’ level with a little professional help,” she said.
Dr Sharma said that parents should observe perseverance and get down to a child’s thinking level to understand him or her better. The seminar also relied on easy to use activities that could be replicated at home. “We should aim at raising a happy and positive child. Once these two bastions are won over, child’s whole life becomes the dream he or she wants to live,” she said.
It outlined effective strategies and disciplinary techniques required to instill ideal behavior amongst the children. The parents came up with queries related to children not paying attention, having learning difficulties and showing adjustment problem due to family break-ups, as in the case of divorce.
The need for spending quality time with children and making emotional investment in them from a young age onwards, was emphasized upon. Dr Sharma said that emotional investment helps children succeed later on in life not only academically but also personally
