The environment week celebrations culminated at Small Wonders School today.
An array of green activities marked the celebrations promoting core idea of planting more trees and producing lesser pollution for a secure future.
Principal cum Director (Acad) Dr. R.K Walia administered pledge to children to be the green heroes of their today’s time. He called upon students as well as teachers to keep surroundings clean and green.
Christened as Grab and Gab Day, the first day saw students of classes I and II talking about ways to contribute towards a healthier air to breath in and clean city to live in. Dressed in red attires, students of play classes and LKG lent a different hue to the celebrations.
Students of class I and II enthusiastically participated in slogan writing competition. Students wrote catchy slogans promoting the green cause.
Going greenthe students of Classes III and IV participated in dustbin making activity in their respective classrooms on third day.
An inter-house quiz competition marked celebrations on fourth day wherein students displayed knowledge gained throughout the week.
Commemorating Earth Day celebrations, students prepared a wall activity exhibiting the knowledge they have of mother earth.
Concluding day has a wonderful power point presentation emphasizing on use of three Rs including reduce, reuse and recycle.
Tiny tots of play way classes and LKG enjoyed nature walk with their respective teachers. Each student was given a gift of life – sapling to plant.

Shemrock Senior Secondary School Mohali celebrated the Earth Day spreading urgency in saving the planet.

School students took out a rally holding placards that bore message of ways to save the earth. Students stood at light junction of phase 7 for more than an hour educating people to keep their vehicles off while waiting at traffic lights. Principal Air Cmdr SK Sharma said, “This exercise proved to be a very powerful medium in educating common man to pool vehicles and reduce carbon emissions. Children today are very vigilant and can work wonders when given an opportunity, holding rally was an opportunity school gave them to spread the message of clean and green environment.”

The placards bore message of saving earth from human activities, pollution and disposal of waste. People were encouraged to reflect on future situation wherein there would be lesser water and lesser green cover, if human went on using natural resources at such maddening speed.

They emphasized that mother earth demanded care from its children. Considering trees as friends not only gave an emotional support but also helps in conserving the green friends.

Students called upon people to plant more trees and ensure that their children and grand children do not curse them for exhausting all natural resources and leaving them to fend for themselves.

City people were asked to make Chandigarh greener and stop littering around. Use of dustbin in the parks was emphasized. They said that every day was an earth day.

“Our earth needs care daily and not for just eon day a year. Celebrating today is like a wake up call for us,” they said.

The students of Anee’s School celebrated Earth Day promoting the message on conserving environment for a secure and green future.

School authorities specially held a rally to help students propagate their ideas of saving Mother Earth from further degeneration. Talking to the students at occasion, principal Harpreet Grewal said that it is the young generation that holds key to a greener environment with lesser pollution levels.

“Observing Earth Day is yet another initiative of school to keep children sensitized on issues related to environment. We teach students about environment, but observing a special day is like putting teachings into a practical frame,” she said.

The school’s rally was around school created awareness amongst general masses too. Students called upon people to use simple methods in contributing towards wellness of environment.

Children with their faces painted with green colors raised the slogans informing people on various issues. They asked people to keep water outside their windows helping birds to quench their thirst in forthcoming sweltering hot weather. The masses were also called upon to help an animal in distress, use recyclable material and conserve sources of energy.

Obesity and sleep disorders in children are associated to their over indulgence in virtual world of television and internet.

Dr Sandip Jain, Head, Department of Pediatrics, Fortis Hospital Mohali observed this while delivering a talk on health at The Millennium School.

Partnering with TMS, Fortis aims to educate students and parents putting the medium of lectures and talks to use. The audience comprised of parents and specialists from field of pediatrics and dentistry.

Komal Singh Principal the Millennium School said that usually parents do not get enough time to interact with their child’s doctor. “This talk is a platform for parents to openly put up their queries on just any issue related to their child and find solution to their long pending problems,” she said.

Talking to the parents, Dr Jain warned that excessive TV viewing and being glued to video games have both psychological and social implications. “Children who excessively indulge in virtual reality have been found to be shy and introvert. They should be encouraged to participate in outdoor activities such as games and sports,” he suggested.

He added that childhood obesity and sleep disorders are common among urban children. “Sleep has direct influence on body's functions and helps body to heal, grow and stay on track. Recent studies have also linked the risk of obesity to not getting enough sleep. Parents should ensure that their children get enough sleep to rejuvenate themselves,” he added.

Dr Jain focused on consequences of indulging in virtual world unmonitored and discussed seriousness of its impact on social behavior of child.

Dwelling on the stigma attached to pediatric asthma and initial indicators, Dr Jain said that earlier the problem is detected, easier it is to control.

Dr Cherry Bector Verma, Resident Dentist from Fortis hospital spoke on number of issues relating to child health. She discussed on the common dental problems that kids face in their daily routine and imparted useful and practical tips on good oral hygiene.

“We cannot afford to have cavities and should have a cavity free generation. Swollen gums, brown black spots on teeth, sensitive teeth, night grinding, tongue thrusting and bad breath are yet another common problems found in children. These can be solved with early intervention and proper treatment,” she said.

The interactive health discussion elicited a great number of queries from audience. Fortis Hospital also announced some special health packages for the students of The Millennium School.

“We will impart around 120 hrs of training for all our teachers throughout academic year to effectively facilitate their learning in wide variety of settings. Teachers are being taught apt use of student friendly technology,” she added.

Four hundred students were conferred degrees at the second convocation and annual prize distribution function of Rayat Institute of Engineering Information and Technology, Railmajra held here today.
Vice-chancellor, Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar Dr Rajneesh Arora conferred degrees to the 2009 batch pass outs from CSE, ECE, IT, ME and electrical. Addressing the students, Dr Arora congratulated them on getting the degrees and observed that with degrees comes responsibility of being nation builders.
“More than 70 percent of people in our country are matriculates, and the rest 30 percent includes graduates in conventional courses as well as the technical professionals. Engineers form three to four percent of the total educated population and its their duty to create job opportunities for others,” he observed.
Talking about the ever-expanding horizon of the Rayat-Bahra group, chairman Gurvinder Singh Bahra said that group is coming up with its university in Himachal Pradesh, which is hardly 12 kms away from Shimla. Besides this the group also plans to introduce its new campus near Delhi.

National conference begins at RBIEBT

The two days national conference on global trends in mechanical engineering (GTME) 2010 started at Rayat-Bahra Institute if Engineering and Biotechnology (RBIEBT) here today.

A venture of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, RBIEBT Kharar the speakers at conference poured thoughts in an array of mechanical engineering related subjects.

Dr. Buta Singh, Dean Academics, Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar was the chief guest at the occasion. While addressing the students, he guided young generation on issues like entrepreneurship, self employment, emerging technologies in mechanical engineering etc. He also talked about the importance of novelty in research by young researchers.

Motivating the students he said, “Every field of mechanics requires research. Rather than merely taking up jobs, engineering students can turn up as entrepreneurs and give jobs to others.”

S. Gurvinder Singh, Chairman Bahra Group of Institutes told the students about job prospects and future trends in mechanical engineering. He gave instances from the day-to-day life highlighting importance of mechanical engineering.

Punjab BJP commits 15,000 people for Delhi rally

The Punjab unit of Bharatiya Janata Party has committed to bring at least 15,000 people to the national rally against price rise to be held in Delhi on April 21.
The state unit of the party today held a meeting of district presidents, ministers, MLAs and chairmen of various boards, corporations etc to work out the modalities. The meeting held under the president ship of State president BJP Punjab Ashwani Sharma was presided over by party in-charge of Punjab affairs Balbir Punj and National Secretary Navjot Sidhu.
Thanking those present at the meeting, Ashwani Sharma expressed his confidence that the figure will exceed 15,000 as the state unit has always performed better than it said it would. He thanked all who had come to attend the meeting.
Earlier, Ashwani Sharma led the state unit in according a warm welcome to Mr Sidhu when he arrived at the venue for the first time after becoming the national secretary.
Mr Balbir Punj said this is going to be the biggest ever rally in Delhi and it will be the Waterloo of the Congress government at the centre. He said the steep rise in the prices of essential commodities was due to the faulty economic policies and corruption in high places rather than a demand-supply gap, since the government is sitting over a large buffer stock of food grains.
Speaking on the occasion Navjot Sidhu said informed that the party has launched a massive signature campaign at the grassroots level against the faulty policies of the Central government. The party assigned special duties to the sitting MLAs, ministers and district presidents for the signature campaign and the national rally.
Sidhu further detailed that the national rally will be held at the Ramlila Grounds and will be followed by a march to Parliament. The party has been holding anti-price rise campaign and rallies in various parts of the country.

The V-roads of sector 15, dug up six months ago, have drawn ire from the area residents. Peeved at the callous attitude of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation authorities, the area residents even allege that the MC had dug up roads but is yet to float tenders for its carpeting.
Area resident Asim Jain, a chartered accountant, rued that the V roads of the sector were dug up in October 2009 with a view to widen them and now the MC has dug up even inner roads of the sector.
Imagine if this is the condition of Mayor Anu Chatarath’s own ward, what to talk about the other areas, in fact the Mayor even resides in this sector, so the wrong things are happening right under her nose
Jain revealed that while V-roads have been dug, stones laid and filled with mud, the MC is yet to float tenders for its carpeting. He added that ideally a road is immediately carpeted with coal-tar and bitumen after being laid with mud. However, at sector 15 it has been over six months and relief does not seem to be round the corner in near future.
Talking about the work initiated on inner roads he said that already the existing roads are 22 feet wide with four feet space left on either sides. “Widening it would only lead to increase in speed of vehicles plying on it and children playing on roads would be at risked,” he said.
He added that the work on inner roads was initiated without informing area residents. JCB machine dug up the roads without informing people whose cars got stuck up. Those cars that were parked on the ramps of houses could not be moved and those standing outside could not be parked inside the houses.
Added to this the dug up roads have posed danger for area residents. Children have to be picked up to get to their homes. The pits dug are as deep as around 1.5 feet. The department is shifting storm water pipes and the holes dug up for it have not been covered that can cause mishap any time. People are unable to park their cars inside their houses and end up crowding the roads.
“The nightmare got even worst when the JCB machine working here pulled out underground power cables leading to power failure in many parts of the sector. When we lodged complaint with the electricity department authorities, they said that the MC officials had not informed them about digging work before hand,” said advocate Vishal Gupta. He added that instead of mending these snapped power cables permanently, the electricity department officials twisted the wires to repair and then left the circuit exposed.
Interestingly, some area residents even pointed out that area in front of houses of some Congress workers has been left untouched. The MC has adopted pick and choose policy even in such a mundane work like road widening, alleged area residents. They have sought immediate redressal of the problem.

Principal Air CMD SK Sharma said that as a part of telling students about the festival’s importance, they were taken to a farm house to impart practical knowledge of harvesting crop and the joy of festivity that accompanies it.

Students were also involved in grain pasting activity during art session wherein they were asked to make a collection of different kinds of grains found and label the same. Jubilant kids celebrated the Baisakhi dancing on the tunes of Punjabi dhol.

Baisakhi, the festival marking onset of wheat harvesting, was celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm at the Ashmah International School today.

School premises wore a festive look with compound fully decorated with hand made charts, ribbons and flowers. Students were dressed up in colorful attire.

In order to give students first hand account of sowing and harvesting, wheat was sown in school in December and harvested today. Children were thrilled absorbing this practical knowledge.

Prayers marked the starting of celebrations. Students presented cultural dances and bhangra as well. Class IV students danced to the tunes of ‘toori tand sambh jatt mele chaleya’ that audience enjoyed.

Director of the school, JS Kesar appreciated the efforts of staff.
Principal, R Ghuman told the students about the importance of this
festival. She highlighted the role of farmer in providing food to the nation.

“Farmers work hard and till land in summers and winters to provide us food. We should respect his hard work and commitment,” she told students.

Young orators spoke about the festival’s significance and the kind of joy it brings to farming community. Senior students presented a spectacular bhangra performance that set stage on fire.

The function concluded with the speech given by the school Principal Harpreet Grewal whereing she talked about the significance of natural fertilizers and manures in agriculture practices.

“High levels of industrial and vehicular pollution have already wreaked havoc with the environment. Overuse of chemicals in agriculture has poisoned our platter and we seriously need to go back old times of farming without chemicals,” Grewal said.

Innovation, flexibility and efficiency are the three vital keys to good teaching, said Mala Malhotra the resource person of four-day teachers training programme that concluded at Small Wonders School today.

A collaboration of the Small Wonders School and idiscoveri XSEED, a Delhi based company engaged in the field of innovative education held this four day workshop that was interspersed with lot of activities for participating teachers.

Principal-cum-Director Academies Dr. RK Walia inaugurated workshop and welcomed resource person Mala Malhotra.

In his welcome addressed, Dr. Walia said that workshop aimed at preparing educators to understand soul and methodology of XSEED curriculum so that they can implement it effectively in classroom. Dr Walia thanked Sandeep Singh, Director for taking initiative to provide an opportunity to enhance teaching, learning skills.

Malhotra gave valuable insight into teaching process and enlightened educators about growing trends in education. She said that XSEED aims to make learning exciting and meaningful for every child.

With the onset of 2010-11 session the participating teachers will implement the XSEED curriculum in their respective classes. The four days workshop discussed the expectations from child behavior that emphasized on core that every child is different.

Resource person Malhotra talked about the teaching and learning cycle for a teacher. The teachers were acquainted with teaching components such as teacher manuals, students, workbook and training for teachers / instructional leader.

The most interesting part of workshop remained XSEED classroom management techniques that identified five components of a well managed classroom.

Workshop introduced teachers to an assessment cycle that remained five hours activity. They were made to understand fundamentals of assessment and assessment cycle. It recognized value of non judgmental observation as a tool for effective assessment and feedback.

Malhotra encouraged adopting rationale assessment policy and discover possibility of alternative ways of assessment beyond pencil and paper tests.
